Frequently Asked Questions

General information about the screening process. For full details, refer to the WTA Women's Eligibility Policy; in the event of any conflict, the Policy controls.

What is Sport Screening, and why am I being asked to complete it?
Under the WTA Women's Eligibility Policy, players must demonstrate their eligibility to compete in WTA Tournaments by means of SRY Screening. This portal guides you through the required education, consent, and screening steps.
What is the SRY gene, and what does the screening test for?
SRY (Sex-determining Region of the Y chromosome) is a gene that helps initiate testes development, beginning a process that depends on many other genes and hormones. The screen looks for the SRY sequence in your sample using PCR. The result is binary: SRY is either detected or not detected. The General Education video explains this in more detail.
How is the sample collected?
SRY screening is typically a non-invasive cheek swab, saliva test, or blood sample. The collection itself takes only a few minutes.
What does a positive or negative result mean?
A "not detected" (negative) result is generally consistent with a 46,XX pattern and confirms your ability to compete. A "detected" (positive) result is one piece of genetic information; the WTA Medical Manager will advise on any further information or testing needed to assess eligibility. A positive result does not mean you are disqualified.
Who can see my results and personal information?
Your information is encrypted, stored securely, and only shared with authorized medical staff on your care team. It is not shared publicly or with other players.
Is my health information protected?
Yes. Your data is handled in accordance with HIPAA and applicable privacy laws. You have the right to access, correct, or request deletion of your health data. See the Notice of Privacy Practices.
What happens on screening day?
Plan to arrive about 15 minutes before your booked time at the testing venue. A WTA representative will check you in and guide you through the process. Bring your physician script and a valid photo ID. Do not eat, drink, smoke, or chew gum for 30 minutes before your collection. The WTA will share any additional day-of details with you directly.
What if I choose not to consent to screening?
You are free to decline to sign the Player Acknowledgement and Agreement of Eligibility Form. However, doing so will render you ineligible to compete in WTA Tournaments.
What are the steps, and can I finish later?
The portal walks you through education videos and quizzes, the Player Acknowledgement, your genetic counselling election, data consent, your physician script, and booking your screening. Your progress is saved, so you can complete it across multiple sessions.
Who do I contact if I have questions?
For questions about the portal or the screening process, email info@screeningsports.com. Questions specific to the WTA Women's Eligibility Policy will be directed to the WTA.
